Pursuing real-world, hands-on experience 

For me, internships have been about much more than gaining experience for my CV. They have been an opportunity to understand what it means to work in a professional environment, learn from different people, and discover the skills and qualities I want to develop throughout my career in finance. Every internship experience has given me something different, whether it was a new technical skill, a different way of approaching a problem, or simply a better understanding of how people work together.

One of the most valuable aspects of my internship experiences has been collaboration. Finance can sometimes be seen as a field focused primarily on numbers and analysis, but my experiences have shown me how important people are to every successful outcome. Working with colleagues from different backgrounds and with different perspectives has taught me to listen, communicate clearly, and be open to ideas that may differ from my own. I have learned that good teamwork is not just about contributing your own ideas, but also about supporting others, asking questions, and being willing to learn from the people around you.

Having exposure to different responsibilities has also allowed me to develop a wider range of skills. Alongside building my understanding of finance and analytical work, I have had opportunities to strengthen my communication, organisation, problem-solving, and time-management abilities. Each new responsibility has pushed me slightly outside my comfort zone. I have come to appreciate that professional growth does not always come from being immediately good at something; sometimes it comes from being willing to try, make mistakes, learn, and try again.

Another important lesson I have gained is the value of adaptability. Every workplace has its own environment, expectations, and way of doing things. Experiencing different settings has taught me to adjust, stay positive when situations change, and approach unfamiliar tasks with curiosity rather than hesitation. This is particularly important to me as someone beginning a career in finance, where markets, technology, and business needs are constantly evolving. I believe that being adaptable is just as important as having technical knowledge.

Most importantly, internships have given me real-world exposure that cannot always be gained through academic study alone. Concepts that I have encountered in my studies become much more meaningful when I see how they are applied in actual business situations. Meeting deadlines, communicating professionally, working as part of a team, and taking responsibility for my work have helped me understand what a career in finance looks like beyond the classroom.

Looking back, I see each internship as part of a larger journey rather than an isolated experience. The variety of environments and responsibilities has helped me understand not only what I can do, but also the kind of professional I want to become. I hope to carry forward the lessons I have learned about collaboration, adaptability, continuous learning, and empathy as I continue developing my career in finance.
